Supernova Kicks and Misaligned Be Star Binaries

چکیده
Be stars are rapidly spinning B stars surrounded by an outflowing disc of gas in Keplerian rotation. Be star/X-ray binary systems contain a Be star and a neutron star. They are found to have non-zero eccentricities and there is evidence that some systems have a misalignment between the spin axis of the star and the spin axis of the binary orbit. The eccentricities in these systems are be caused by a kick to the neutron star during the supernova that formed it. Such kicks would also give rise to misalignments. In this paper we investigate the extent to which the same kick distribution can give rise to both the observed eccentricity distribution and the observed misalignments. We find that a Maxwellian distribution of velocity kicks with a low velocity dispersion, σk ≈ 15 km s , is consistent with the observed eccentricity distribution but is hard to reconcile with the observed misalignments, typically i > 25◦. Alternatively a higher velocity kick distribution, σk = 265 km s , is consistent with the observed misalignments but not with the observed eccentricities, unless postsupernova circularisation of the binary orbits has taken place. We discuss briefly how this might be achieved.

Runaway Velocities of Stellar Components Originating from Disrupted Binaries via Asymmetric Supernova Explosions
We present analytical formulae to calculate the dynamical effects of asymmetric supernova explosions which disrupt a binary system. These formulae are applied to Monte Carlo simulations of asymmetric supernovae in a large number of binaries. The expected velocities of runaway neutron stars and companion stars are calculated as a function of separation and component masses, prior to the explosio...
متن کاملProbing Electron-capture Supernovae: X-ray Binaries in Starbursts
We develop population models of high-mass X-ray binaries (HMXBs) formed after bursts of star formation and we investigate the effect of electron-capture supernovae (ECS) of massive ONeMg white dwarfs and the hypothesis that ECS events are associated with typically low supernova kicks imparted to the nascent neutron stars. We identify an interesting ECS bump in the time evolution of HMXB numbers...
متن کاملA propelling neutron star in the enigmatic Be-star γ Cassiopeia
γ Cassiopeia (γ Cas), is known to be a binary system consisting of a Be-type star and a low-mass (M ∼ 1M ) companion of unknown nature orbiting in the Be-disc plane. Here, we apply the quasi-spherical accretion theory on to a compact magnetized star and show that if the low-mass companion of γ Cas is a fast spinning neutron star, the key observational signatures of γ Cas are remarkably well rep...
متن کاملPulsar Kicks and Spin Tilts in the Close Double Neutron Stars Psrj0737-3039, Psrb1534+12 and Psrb1913+16
In view of the recent measurement of the scintillation velocity for PSRJ0737-3039, we examine the complete set of constraints imposed on the pulsar B natal kicks (magnitude and orientation) and predict the most favorable pulsar kick velocity and spin tilt for both isotropic and polar kicks. Our analysis takes into account both currently unknown parameters: the orientation of the orbital plane o...
متن کاملInferences about Supernova Physics from Gravitational-Wave Measurements: GW151226 Spin Misalignment as an Indicator of Strong Black-Hole Natal Kicks.
The inferred parameters of the binary black hole GW151226 are consistent with nonzero spin for the most massive black hole, misaligned from the binary's orbital angular momentum. If the black holes formed through isolated binary evolution from an initially aligned binary star, this misalignment would then arise from a natal kick imparted to the first-born black hole at its birth during stellar ...
